AREDS 2, Lutein and Zeaxanthin: Understanding Eye Vitamin Labels
Eye vitamins are some of the most-searched supplements, and two terms come up again and again: AREDS 2 and carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin. Here is what they mean.
What is AREDS 2?
AREDS 2 refers to the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2, a large study sponsored by the US National Eye Institute. Products labeled "AREDS 2 formula", such as PreserVision AREDS 2, are based on the combination of vitamins, minerals and carotenoids used in that study. If an eye care professional has recommended an AREDS 2 formula, check the label to make sure the product matches.
Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin
These are carotenoids, natural pigments found in leafy greens and other foods, and also found in the macula of the eye. Some formulas, like MacuHealth, include all three.
Omega-3s for eye comfort
Some people also use omega-3 supplements, like PRN De3, as part of their routine for occasional eye dryness.
Tips for choosing
- Follow the advice of your eye doctor, especially if you have a diagnosed eye condition.
- Compare the amount of each ingredient per serving and the number of softgels per day.
- Smokers and former smokers should ask their doctor which formula is appropriate.
